Bilingual Webinar on Grief & Loss: Coping with the Loss of a Loved One

In a joint collaboration, NuLife Care & Counselling (“NuLife”) and Sirpigal Mandram conducted a bilingual webinar on July 29, 2021, that aimed to enlighten participants on a concerning arena of mental health that has arisen and evolved as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; Grief and Loss.

NuLife CEO, Dr Sheena Jebal, facilitated an audience engaging interactive session that encouraged participants to share their thoughts about the topic. Some of the areas that were explored included throwing light on the different types of grief, giving an overview of the signs and symptoms of grief and loss, understanding the grieving process, addressing misconceptions surrounding grief and loss, being aware of the fundamentals of supporting oneself and others who are grieving and providing some handy resources that help in navigating the grief and loss journey.

The webinar was made more impactful through an insightful sharing session by 2 survivors of grief and loss, each of whom bore unique experiences of the grievances and losses they encountered over their life course and how they navigated their grief and loss journey to be where they are today. Participants were deeply appreciative of the sharing segment and expressed strong words of encouragement to the 2 survivors who bravely shared their personal experiences.

The webinar concluded with a Question-and-Answer session that enabled participants to direct any “burning questions” they had about the topic at hand to our professional guest, Ms Gracie from Whispering Hope SG, a platform that aims to journey with individuals in grief recovery and equip people with the language and tools they need around the concept of grief. The Question-and-Answer session proved to be a worthwhile one. Participants were lastly given the opportunity to recap the information that was shared during the webinar through an exciting quiz segment and a select few were rewarded with e-vouchers.

This is the first in a series of webinars that we hope to organise in collaboration with like-minded organisations in generating awareness on pertinent and rising community issues and in essentially creating a more empathetic and unified community.

Online Seminar on Depression: The Invisible Struggle

The Invisible Struggle on August 28, 2020, offered fresh insights into an area of increasing concern for those of us who realize that fragile mental health is a pressing reality.

NuLife CEO, Ms Sheena Jebal, facilitated an audience engaging interactive session that encouraged active sharing from the participants. Some of the areas that were explored included understanding the myths surrounding this commonly misunderstood affliction, global and local statistics that threw light on the gender, race and age variables of those affected, information on different types of depression and the biopsychosocial factors that make some of us more susceptible, pointers to where one could seek professional help and some handy resources that help in adopting and maintaining positive habits and attitudes to cope with stressors and the anxiety they produce.

What was also underlined was the need to understand the often invisible internal struggle many face while trying to come to terms with depression and the importance of empathy and non-judgemental emotional support as a friend or family member. Helping professionals were encouraged to try and be there for their clients in the most genuine sense possible in addition to using their professional skills to assist them in finding the most client-centered solutions.

This is the first in a series of online seminars that we hope to organise to engage both helping professionals and the general public alike in an attempt to create a more emotionally literate society.
